Sofa 505 is an oldie. Its double functionality result of a then innovative structure consisting of two racks that would slide one over the other to turn the sofa into a double bed along with its Mediterranean flavour (the sofa-bed combines two natural materials in its making, wood and rattan) made it a best seller in the Spanish summer residences of the seventies and eighties.
Updating a classic design
If there is something Studio expormim does exquisitely is reinterpreting La Exportadora de Mimbre’s old designs. Lead by chief designer Alberto Ales, they have successfully did it before with beloved rattan pieces such as Altet, Radial or Copa. Sofa 505 will now join the ranks of the pieces of rattan furniture that have been rescued from the archives to be aesthetically and functionally revamped to meet the needs of modern living. Sofa 505, in its 2023 version, has increased its length to 190 cm and width to 160 cm to adjust to today’s average percentiles while the upholstered parts have been provided with a more comfortable padding and a zippered base that once unfolded works as a mattress.
